Today, we’re writing about how to turn a laminate wood cabinet into a chic and cozy bed for a new pet. Follow along as we walk you through this fun and easy project.
Step 1: Removing Hardware and Cleaning
First, I removed the hardware from the cabinet. Next, I cleaned the entire cabinet with Simple Green. This step is crucial because it ensures all dirt and grime are removed, providing a clean surface for Beyond Paint to adhere to.
Step 2: Adding Character with Contact Paper
Before painting, I measured the back of the cabinet and placed some decorative contact paper to add a touch of character. This step is optional but adds a unique element to the finished piece.
Step 3: Painting with Beyond Paint
Now, it's time to paint! Today, I'm using Soft Gray, a very light and subtle gray. Give the paint a good shake before opening. I used the 3/8 inch microfiber roller and paint tray from the Beyond Paint Toolkit to achieve a smooth and even finish. With Beyond Paint’s all-in-one formula, there’s no need to strip, sand, or prime the surface.
Applying the first coat, I ensured all surfaces were covered, sometimes using the roller vertically to get into the details of the cabinet. The coverage with just the first coat was impressive, as always.
Step 4: Drying Time and Second Coat
After applying the first coat, I let it dry for 2-4 hours. While waiting, I cleaned and spray-painted the hardware in gold to give it a fresh look. After the drying time, I applied the second coat of Soft Gray. For a contrasting detail, I painted the house outline on the cabinet in bright white.
Step 5: Adding Final Touches
Once the second coat was dry, I installed a battery-powered puck light inside the cabinet for a cozy glow. I also added a soft blanket to make the space inviting for a pet. Finally, after the hardware was dry, I reinstalled it.
The Final Result
And there you have it—a brand-new, chic pet bed created in three easy steps using Beyond Paint! The steps are simple:
- Clean the surface
- Apply the first coat of paint
- Apply the second coat of paint
With Beyond Paint, I’ve never needed more than two coats for full coverage, making it an efficient and effective choice for any project. This transformation used only a small amount of paint from a brand-new pint.
