As any carpenter or DIY homeowner knows, the base of any project is your workspace. Whether you are putting up a new fence, building a few outdoor planter boxes, fixing up your backyard patio, or tackling some other home project, it pays to have a supportive surface to work on. That being said, a sturdy workbench with a good surface is oftentimes hard to come by. If you’ve ever shopped for a workbench before, chances are you can attest to how difficult it is to find one that not only looks nice, but that can withstand the elements over time. Workbenches are made out of many different materials - from wood to metal and everything in between. If you or someone in your household likes to get your hands dirty and are somewhat of a home project addict, you need a workbench that won’t get super dinged up and that can hold up to everything you put it through.
BEYOND PAINT’s countertop makeover kit allows you to transform a beat up old workbench into something multidimensional, interesting, and useful. This countertop system works on a wide range of surfaces - such as bathroom vanities, kitchen counters, bar tops, and, you guessed it, workbenches. In just two or three steps, you will be able to transform a workbench that has seen better days or is simply in need of a modern makeover. This system is incredibly easy to use and requires no stripping, sanding, or priming, which is the best part!
As you can see from the pictures, we constructed our own workbench out of simple plywood and two-by-fours. Once it was built to our liking, it was easy to see that it was missing both charm and character. With the help of BEYOND PAINT’s countertop system, we now have a beautiful, functional workbench that we aren’t afraid to show off!
What You Will Need
The style and type of workbench you use will be up to your personal preferences. As mentioned, we chose to build our own workbench, but you can easily find a used one on Craigslist or a secondhand store. Once you have the table you are going to use, make sure you wipe it off with a rag to ensure no dust, dirt, or other particles are stuck to the surface. Here is a look at the various materials and products you will need to complete this project:
- BEYOND PAINT Countertop Makeover Kit
- The kit comes with everything you will need - BEYOND PAINT of your choice (we used Charcoal), Multi-Purpose Sealer, Flecks, instructional DVD, insert, and paint tools (2 roller handles, 2 roller covers, chip brush, and tray)
- Dry cloth
If you are using the entire BEYOND PAINT Countertop Makeover Kit, you can begin by getting everything out and making sure you understand which product is used when. Once you have wiped down, cleaned and degreased your workbench surface, you can now begin!
Open your BEYOND PAINT in Charcoal (or whichever color you chose) and stir it well.
Pour the paint into the tray that was included with your kit. Then, using the roller brush, apply the BEYOND PAINT to the surface of the workbench. Be as generous as you would like with this process, as the finished product will depend on your personal taste. If your workbench surface is a darker shade, you may have to apply three or more coats. Because we were starting with a relatively light, unmarred wood surface, we only had to use two coats of BEYOND PAINT in Charcoal. Do your best to allow the paint to dry in-between coats, at least two hours between coats recommended, as this will ensure the surface is covered completely.
One note during this step – BEYOND PAINT Countertop paint is slightly textured, which means you do not have to adhere to traditional brush stroked. Simply roll the paint on (have some fun with it!) and see how the texture comes out.
While your final coat is still wet, apply the countertop flecks evenly in order to achieve a granite countertop look. This is probably the best part about this system, as it will leave you with an interesting, contemporary finished project that you won’t be afraid to work on. The Flecks pieces add an extra layer of texture and are the perfect addition to a workbench.
If possible, allow the paint and flecks to dry for 24 hours. At this point you can apply the Multi-Purpose Sealer. This will keep your workbench safe and ensure it won’t become unsightly after all those home projects.
As you can see, the finished project is a far cry from where it started! The Charcoal pairs perfectly with the Flecks and we truly couldn’t be happier with the workbench. The only thing left to do is figure out which project to start first…We would love to hear about your experience using BEYOND PAINT’s Countertop product, and would be happy to answer any questions you may need to get started.
